EuroTour day 17 – to Kelheim

I was able to start around 6:30 in the morning today and most of the ride I had a tailwind so I made this a longer than usual ride.

On the way I passed the city of Donauworth where Airbus planes (or parts of them) are made. Also I passed the city of Ingolstadt where Audi cars are made. Not surprisingly many cars on the roads in that city were Audi.

I am staying in some campground which looks like a farm that provides a place for bike tourers. But it has showers and clean toilets.

There was a group of guys with boxes of beer and one of them gave me a bottle. He said it is from München. It tasted good.

EuroTour day 16 – To Steinheim

Short and easy ride today. Passing through some nice towns on the way. I am now in the Bavaria region of Germany. This is where BMW and Audi are made.

Germany is overall much cheaper than Switzerland. For example a campground in Shaffhausen was $25. In Germany I get a very nice AirBnB room for $35.

EuroTour day 15 – to Ulm

Very scenic ride today especially at the beginning while the route was going through the Donau valley. I can see why this is a popular destination for bikers and bike tourers.

The highlight of today’s ride was the Sigmaringen Castle. I bought a breakfast in a nearby supermarket and then went to the park near the castle and had a breakfast with a nice view.

My destination for today was the city called Ulm. The campgrounds are really sparse on this section of EuroVelo 6 so I had to book an AirBnB in Ulm. I hope the campgrounds become more frequent again soon as I started liking staying in them and sleeping in a tent.

EuroTour day 14 – to somewhere in Germany

Riding along Rhine river was great but now I started riding north and north-east towards the middle of Germany. Today’s route had a fair bit of climbing as it went to where the Danube river starts. The good news is that after today the route will follow Danube and will be mostly downhill.

The Danube river valley is pretty scenic and I hope I will see even more nice scenery tomorrow. The Danube river itself is underwhelming so far.

Yesterday when I planned the route for the day I picked a campground in approximately 70 miles. Today when I got there there was no campground at all. It was just a field of wheat. I rode to a nearby small town of Beuron, hoping that maybe I’ll find a hotel there. But everything was closed there for some reason. Also the cell phone reception was really bad so I could not lookup another nearby campground. After riding around in the town for a while I was able to connect to some free wi-fi and found another campground 6 miles away. That was very fortunate as I did not really want to wild camp.

EuroTour day 13 – To Schaffhausen

I decided to continue with my original tour plan and stay on the EuroVelo 6 route. The main goal of this tour was to ride in as many countries as possible. If I detour to Switzerland Alps I won’t have enough time to ride in Czech Republic and I really want to do that.

Today’s route followed the Rhine river and it crossed the border between Germany and Switzerland at least five times. I guess I never crossed countries borders so many times in one day before.

While riding I’ve talked with a few bike tourers that were going in the same direction. Most of them were local and did a couple days tours. One couple from Tasmania (!) was riding to Budapest on the same route as me but they do 60 km per day.

The highlight of the day was the stop at the Rhine Falls.

The route in Germany and Switzerland is marked well enough. Also the cycling roads are good in general. Out of the 70 miles today I shared the road with cars maybe for 5-8 miles. There are some sections on gravel roads but they are smooth and marked well. Also today’s ride had some climbs but nothing too bad.
